NPFL Week 16 Round Up: Enyimba stumble as Sunshine step up title chase

The Akure Gunners grabbed valuable away point but the People’s Elephant were held to a draw in a thrilling Abia derby as Giwa and FC Ubah secure victory

DOLPHINS 1-1 WIKKI TOURISTS

The Pride of Rivers are finding life very hard in the top flight this season after they stuttered to another home draw against Wikki Tourists at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday evening.

The visitors stunned Dolphins’ fans with the opening goal in the 58th minute through Mubarak Umar but when it was as if the hosts would suffer another home loss, they got a penalty in the dying moments of the match from which Victor Ezuruike converted.

Dolphins still remain 18thon the log with 14 points from 16 games while Wikki gained important road point to hold on to third place on the table with 29 points from same number of games.



GIWA 2-1 HEARTLAND

It was an explosive match at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna but the ‘home’ team clawed a win after two goals from Ibrahim Shuiabu and Amos Gyan in the 22ndand 69thminutes defused the ninth minute effort of Naze Millionaires’ Bright Ejike.

Giwa strengthened their hold on fourth spot with the win as they have garnered 28 points from 16 games while Heartland dropped out of the top five to sixth on the log with 25 points from same number of matches.



FC  IFEANYIUBAH 1-0 3SC

The Anambra Warriors halted their two match winless streak with the narrow win over the Oluyole Warriors which handed the Ibadan side’s head coach Gbenga Ogunbote his first loss since he joined the club six games ago. They had gone on five games unbeaten before the tie.

FC IfeanyiUbah are fifth on the log with 26 points from 16 matches while 3SC are 14thwith 17 points from 15 games. Stephen Chukwude scored the lone goal in the 11thminute of the match.



SHARKS 0-0 NASARAWA UNITED

The return of the Blue Angels to the Sharks Stadium did not bring them the expected luck as they were held again! At home by the Solid Miners in a listless game played on Sunday.

Sharks are still bottom of the log with 12 points from 16 games. They have only won a game(1-0 versus Akwa United in Week 3) and have drawn nine games while Nasarawa United are 11thon the log with 22 points from as many games.



FC TARABA 0-0 KWARA UNITED

The Jalingo Boys need more than divine touch to remain in the elite division at the end of the season after another failed attempt to secure maximum points at home to Kwara United at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi on Sunday. They played a goalless draw.

FC Taraba are 19thon the log with 13 points from 16 matches while Kwara United are also getting closer to the relegation zone despite the draw they are 17thon the log with 16 points from 15 games. Harmony Warriors’ Suraj Ayeleso was reportedly outstanding against FC Taraba with his impress saves to deny the home team.



ENYIMBA 2-2 ABIA WARRIORS

The People’s Elephant blew up the chance to go top of the league table after their bogey team and sister club, Abia Warriors ensured honours are evened at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba on Sunday.

The countenance on the face of Enyimba head coach, Kadiri Ikhana said it all after the match. Abia Warriors shot into the lead in the 28thminute through Ndifreke Effiong but Enyimba equalized in the 45thminute through Christian Obiozor. The People’s Elephant got their own second goal of the match in the 50thminute through Daniel Etor but the Umuahia side found their way back to get the leveler 10 minutes from time.

Enyimba are second on the log with 30 points from 16 games while Abia Warriors moved to eighth position with 23 points from as many matches.



BAYELSA UNITED 2-0 WARRI WOLVES

The Restoration Boys played one of their best games of the season to beat the Seasiders at the Oghara Township Stadium on Sunday with the goals of Oladimeji Hassan and Kadiri Samad in the 55thand 87thminutes.

The Yenogoa side are 16thon the log with 17 points from 16 games while Wolves are 12thwith 20 points from 13 matches.



LOBI STARS 1-1 SUNSHINE STARS

The Akure Gunners stepped up their chase to land their first league title after they drew in Makurdi against Lobi Stars on Sunday.

Tunde Adeniji shocked the fans at the Aper Aku Stadium with the curtain raiser in the 64thminute but the Pride of Benue regrouped to level up five minutes later through substitute, Obioma Arinze after good work from Anthony Okpotu.

Lobi are 15thon the log with 17 points from 16 games while Sunshine are first with 30 points from 16 matches.



AKWA UNITED 2-0 ENUGU RANGERS

The Promise Keepers’ technical crew led by Zachary Baraje passed their first acid test as they secured their first win of the three match ultimatum handed them by the Akwa United management after a 2-0 home win over the Flying Antelopes.

Namso Edo put Akwa United in the ascendancy in the 53rdminute from the penalty spot while Nathaniel Kingsley added the second 11 minutes from time to take the Uyo side’s point tally to 18 from 16 games. They are 13thon the log.

It was Rangers’ first loss in five matches but they are now ninth on the log with 23 points from 16 games.



KANO PILLARS 1-0 EL KANEMI WARRIORS

Sai Masu Gida returned to winning ways on Sunday after a close 1-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

Adamu Mohammed continued his impressive form for Pillars after he netted his fifth goal of the season from nine starts in the 24thminute of the match.

Pillars are seventh on the log with 25 points from 16 games while El Kanemi are 10thwith 23 points from 15 matches.
